Once just a force in Spain, IBERDROLA has become a major player in the power industry on both sides of the Atlantic over the past few years. In 2014 it was serving 32.6 million customers in Europe and the Americas, and it owned hydroelectric, fossil-fueled, nuclear, and renewable power generation facilities with a capacity of about 45,089 MW (56% of which was derived from hydrolectric or other green energy sources). It also has gas distribution operations in Spain. The company is putting a major focus on being the world leader in developing renewable energy plants, primarily wind power facilities. To expand its US renewables business, in 2015 the company agreed to buy UIL Holdings in a $3 billion deal.
